The Seychelles Polytechnic is operational from 8.00 am to 4.00 p.m. over a ten-month calendar year extending from mid-February to mid-December with two semesters of 20 weeks, a mid-semester break of one week in each semester, and a three week break in July.

Students home 2007Visual Arts Programme.

The Visual Arts programme Area is a recent addition to the Polytechnic. The main campus is currently located at Mont Fleuri, but will be relocated to the Anse Royale campus during the course of 2006. The Programme Area has more than 100 full-time students.

Courses

For S4 and S5 leavers, the Programme Area offers full-time courses over a period of three years in the following;

Fashion: Machine Technology, Pattern Cutting, Block Cutting, Garment

Construction and Illustration

Textile: Tie & Dye, Batik, Printed Textile. Drawing, Colour Design and Project.

Fine Art: Colour Theory, Figure Drawing, Composition, Elements & Principles

of Design, Media and Painting.

Graphic: Colour Theory, Figure Drawing, Composition, Elements & Illustration

and Computer Applications.

These are basic preparatory one-year ‘Foundation’ courses. After successful completion, a student progress to the second year and eventually the third year.

During the year students study 4 modules of the course for which they have registered. A module is made up of 2 or 4 units per semester, making 8 or 16 units for the year. A student must pass at least 8 or 12 units to be awarded his/her certificate. Certificates are awarded with the grades of Pass (C), Credit (B) and Distinction (A). For the promotion from the Foundation year to a more specialized second year the grade of C+ is the minimum requirement.

To qualify for the award of Certificate students must also study the core academic subjects of English, Mathematics, Information & Communication Technology, Business Studies and French.

For all Art & Design Courses, Drawing and Critical Studies are also compulsory.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants to Foundation Courses will be:

School leavers who have successfully completed S5 preferably, (S4 students can also be accepted) who have followed the IGCSE programme and attained passes in English, French and Mathematics.

The ROA (Record of Achievement) will be used and should indicate students in the Art & Design domain and who have an aptitude for the subject. It is advisable for students to keep a portfolio of their relevant artwork, craft or design work. This should include finished work and ample evidence, such as sketches, photos, plans and notes, as to how the work was conceived, developed and made. Such information is helpful to move students from one area to the next for their own benefit.

School leavers who have not followed appropriate courses may also apply for placement. Each application will be considered on its individual merits but all applicants must meet the criteria listed beneath.

Applicants with the most ability or the most potential, as shown in the ROA/Folio. The expected minimum standard is approximately that of IGCSE Grade C, but it is not necessary to have taken the examination.

Awards At the end of the course, successful students will receive:

• Certificate in Art and Design.

After completing the course the students have the opportunity to set up their own business or seek employment with different organizations.
