The Seychelles Polytechnic is operational from 8.00 am to 4.00 p.m. over a ten-month calendar year extending from mid-February to mid-December with two semesters of 20 weeks, a mid-semester break of one week in each semester, and a three week break in July.

Diploma in Business Studies & Accounting

The Diploma in Business Studies & Accounting course is of two-year duration offered on a full-time basis to students who have IGCSE, and accommodates the components of AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians - UK) Foundation and Intermediate stages. This course is aimed at applicants seeking a career in the business and accountancy professions. The course also provides a technical foundation for recognized professional qualifications in the accounting field and to progress for higher qualifications.

There are eight subjects on offer throughout the course. They are

• Cost and Management Accounting

• Financial Accounting

• Economics

• Management of Business

• Quantitative Methods

• Information Technology

• Business Communication

• Business French

All students are attached to various business organisations during the course of the two-year period for 10 weeks.

Assessment and Certification

In-house continuous assessments in the form of assignments, project work and end of semester examinations take place as per established schedules in each subject area. Examinations set and marked by the Association of Accounting Technicians (UK) leading to the qualifications of AAT Foundation and Intermediate stages will also take place in December each year.

Entry Requirement

Applicants should have a minimum of three IGCSE (extended) in English, French, Mathematics at grade C or above.

Awards

At the end of the course, all successful students will receive;

• Diploma in Business Studies and Accounting from the Seychelles Polytechnic.

• Certificates of Competence from the Association of Accounting Technicians (UK) for both Foundation and Intermediate stages, equivalent to UK’s National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) levels 2 and 3 respectively.

Employment and Further Opportunities

Employment opportunities exist in the Government, Parastatals and Private organizations as Accounts Assistants, Tax Officers, Accounts Supervisors, Marketing Executives, Payroll Supervisors, Store Clerks/Supervisors, Human Resource Executives, Assistant Accountant, etc. AAT qualifications will allow candidates to successfully complete the AAT Technician Stage and to qualify for the full membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians (UK). Graduates can join the one year full time Advanced Diploma in Accounting course or come on part-time basis to do the Technician Stage of AAT. Graduates are also eligible to join Level 1 of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, and are accepted in the first year programmes of degree courses related to Accounting and Business in most universities in United Kingdom.

Advanced Diploma in Accounting

The course structure of the one-year full-time course incorporates the Technician stage of AAT.

Subjects on offer include:

• Advanced Financial Accounting

• Advanced Management Accounting

• Managing Systems & People in the Accounting Environment

• Operating a Cash Management & Environment Credit System

• Computerised Accounting

• Implementing Auditing Procedures.

In-house continuous assessments takes place as per established schedules in each subject area. There are end of semester exams and students sit for Devolved Assessments during the academic year with the Central Assessments in December.

Entry Requirements

Students of the Diploma of Business Studies & Accounting who have successfully completed all Devolved and Central Assessments of the Foundation and Intermediate Stages of the Education and Training Scheme of A.A.T. Students who have passed A’ level Accounting are also eligible to apply.

Awards At the end of the course, all successful students receive:

• Advanced Diploma in Accounting

• Technician Certificate of AAT, NVQ Level 4.

• Polytechnic Certificate of attendance.

• Membership of AAT, subject to one year’s full time work experience.

• A.A.T. Diploma in Accounting, provided candidates have completed central assessments of foundation and intermediate stages as well.

Employment and Further Training Opportunities

Full AAT Qualifications will allow candidates to qualify for the full membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians (UK) and is recognized by professional bodies such as Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (A.C.C.A) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (C.I.M.A).

Employment opportunities are similar to those listed under the Diploma in Business Studies and Accounting, but, invariably, holders of the Advanced Diploma have an edge on the job market, and will be better placed to secure higher positions than diploma holders.

Students who have completed all AAT modules successfully and obtained their Technician Certificate are also eligible for scholarship.

Diploma in Secretarial Studies

The structure of this two-year full-time course incorporates three inter-linked Pitman qualifications Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Diplomas and provides a progressive route for further studies and qualifications.

• Office Procedures

• Book-Keeping and Accounts

• Business Communication

• Business French

• Word Processing

• Information Technology

• Management Appreciation

All students will be attached to various business organizations during the course of the two-year period for 10 weeks.

In-house continuous assessments in the form of assignments, project work and end of semester examinations take place as per established schedules in each subject area. Examinations set and marked by Pitman Qualifications (City and Guilds International) also take place in December each year.

Entry Requirement

This course is aimed at applicants seeking a career in the Secretarial and Administrative professions. In addition, this qualification is suitable for those in employment (with basic qualifications such as Certificates in Secretarial and Clerical studies) who wish to further develop their secretarial and/or administrative skills. It is also appropriate for those wishing to progress to senior secretarial, personal assistant and administrative positions in an organization.

Applicants should have a minimum of three O’ levels or IGCSE (extended) and these must be in English, French and Mathematics which should be at grade C or above.

Awards

At the end of the course, all successful students receive:

• Diploma in Secretarial Studies from the Polytechnic.

• Pitman Certificates in Shorthand, Typewriting/Wordprocessing,Office Procedures and Book-keeping and Accounts.

Excellent employment opportunities exist in the Government, Parastatals and Private organizations as Secretaries, Senior Clerks, Administrative Assistants and Personal Assistants.
